The United States Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) released a revised version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, on July 17, 2017. Employers are required under federal law to obtain properly completed I-9 forms to verify identity and employment eligibility of all individuals hired for employment in the U.S. The form changes involve minor revisions to the I-9 instructions and List of Acceptable Documents page of the I-9 form.

While the changes are minor, USCIS is mandating that only the new version can be used after the cutoff date. Specifically, employers can use this new version (dated 07/17/17) or continue using the prior version of the I-9 (dated 11/14/16) through September 17, 2017.
On September 18, 2017, employers must use the version dated 07/17/17. Do not use expired or previous versions of the I-9.
EP’s new payroll start forms (with attached updated Form I-9s) will be available in mid-September before the September 18, 2017 deadline, but updated PDF-fillable versions are available now. Check with your paymaster for new form stock or digital versions.
