ALERT: New I-9 Form Issued

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) revised the Form I-9. January 21, 2017 is the last day you can use the older version. Beginning on January 22, 2017, you will need to use the new version of the Form I-9.

How can you get the new Form I-9?

Digital versions of the form are now available. You can request the proper form from your Paymaster. Hard copies will be available by mid-January.

When is the last day to use the old version?

January 21, 2017, is the last day that you can use the old version of the Form I-9.  Beginning on, and after, January 22, 2017, you will need to use the new version of the I-9.

How can I distinguish the new form from the old one?

The best way to distinguish the new Form I-9 from the old version is to look at the date in the lower left corner. The new form is dated November 14, 2016, while the old form is marked March 8, 2013.

What should you do with the old forms?

You should destroy the old forms, so you don’t accidentally use them instead of the new ones.

If copies of the employee’s ID and other verification documents are attached to Form I-9, do we still need to fill out Section 2?

Yes. You still need to fill out Section 2. Retaining copies does not relieve you of the obligation to complete the document information and the certification portion of Section 2.

The Form I-9 is used to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment in the U.S. All U.S. employers must make sure that the Form I-9 for each individual they hire for employment in the U.S. is filled out properly.
